| Book Recommendations? |
[Aug. 8th, 2008|08:06 am] |
Now that *I'M* pretty much unpacked and can actually turn my attention to more interesting things, it occurs to me that I have an Amazon gift certificate that my sister sent for my birthday (in January) that I still haven't used. And since I have room for at least a couple more books, I figure it's time to place an order.
The problem is that I'm kind of at a loss. None of my favorite authors have anything new out that I don't already have, my list of authors to investigate has grown rather scant, and Amazon's recommendations tend to be totally hit or miss in my experience. So I'm turning to you, dear LJers, for some recommendations.
To give an idea of my normal preferences, the following are the authors/genres that I tend towards:
Fantasy: Jacqueline Carey, Anne Bishop, Steven Brust Sci-Fi: Neil Stephenson, Frank Herbert, CJ Cherryh Historical Fiction/Fantasy: Diana Gabaldon, Juliet Marillier, Jules Watson General Lit: AS Byatt, Jeanette Winterson, Mark Helprin Pop Lit: Nick Hornsby, Mil Millington
Anything anyone can suggest would be most appreciated! |

Who in the hell told Bob Dylan he could sing?!?! "Tangled Up in Blue" is on KBCO and I swear to god it's going to make my ears bleed.
The Indigo Girls' version of this is SO much better. |

I've been considering getting a digital camera. We already have one but it hates me (and everyone else evidently), and besides, it's rather large and clunky. I want something very compact so I can carry it everywhere with me because I'm always seeing things and thinking, Damn, I wish I had a camera on me!
Consumer Reports has been relatively unhelpful, as they thus far haven't reviewed any of the ones I'm looking at. I'm leaning towards a Sony, just because everything I own is Sony and they have a very good reputation for not needing frequent repairs (something CR was informative about). Specifically I'm eyeing the DSC-V1 and the DSC-P92.
Like I said, I want something small. With the ability to at least do photo-quality prints at 11x14 (some things I've read say a 3mp will do that, others said only 4 and higher). Auto-focus, and high tolerance for movement since I can't seem make my hands ever stop shaking. Decent zoom (3x at least). And if not a Sony than direct USB so I don't have to dick with getting some sort of card reader.
Any suggestions?
(And no, it's not like I actually have the money to buy one. That's not the point. And not a word out of you, Jon!!!) |

To all you Denver types:
If you or anyone you know would be interested in a part time job in Lakewood, most of my position at the landscaping company is about to be vacant. It'll pay between $9-11 an hour, depending on experience, and average at about 20 hours a week (days and times are flexible). Working familiarity with Windows, Word, and Excel is required, QuickBooks experience is also helpful. It's mostly just customer service and office management kind of stuff, pretty cake. If you're interested or know somebody who is, email a résumé to denverlawnco@hotmail.com. |
